Shiphrah & Puah: 100% Committed
If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re wondering, who in the world are Shiphrah and Puah??? Before flipping through the Bible and researching my next amazing woman, I had no idea who they were either. But they are nestled in Exodus 1 right at the end of the chapter. If you’re tempted to skip to the Birth of Moses, you’ll miss them. And I guarantee you’ll miss a powerful story! It’s so important that they are in our Great Book by Name!
So who are they? Shiphrah and Puah were Hebrew midwives who were responsible for delivering babies during the time of Moses’ birth. The Israelites were becoming so numerous that Pharaoh feared they might rise up against him. He oppressed them as much as he could, but they still multiplied. So, Pharoah ordered Shiphrah and Puah to kill all male children who were born to Hebrew women. Now, what makes them Bible worthy?
“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do (1:17)
Shiphrah and Puah had the ultimate devotion to God! They were risking their lives by defying the king of Egypt’s direct command to them. But their respect and love for God was more than any fear they had of man. They were not swayed by pressure and stood firmly on the Word and Promises of God! And you know what? God not only protected them, He also poured His favor over them. He was “kind to them and gave them families of their own.” Why? Because their devotion to Him ran deeper than any fear or pressure of the world!
I’m sure you know this question is coming, so prepare to be 100% honest with yourself…
How deep is your devotion to Him? How committed are you?
It’s easy to be completely sold out for Jesus at church or with your fellow Christian sisters and friends who are living “that life.” But what about when you’re the exception to the rule? Do you stand up for what you believe in or go along with the crowd? Do you let the curse word slip out, allow him to put his hand there, accompany your friends one more time to that place, laugh at this joke to avoid the awkwardness, downplay your absolute love of Christ and hatred of anything contrary to His words…OR are you 100% committed to living a life that honors the man who stretched out His arms and died for you on the cross simply because He loves you! No matter who, what, when, or where? Stay off the fence sister! I promise there are blessings in your devotion!
Challenge: I challenge you to change the atmosphere around you! I challenge you to live a lifestyle that exudes so much Jesus that when others are around they are the ones who are uncomfortable crossing that line! I challenge you to not sit silently when your Lord is disrespected, but to stand tall for Him. I challenge you to carefully evaluate the words your say, the shows you watch, the music you listen to, the friends you have, the places you frequent, all of you… how do you size up? Don’t know where to start?
Matthew 10:32-33 ~ “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven
Romans 8:31 ~ What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Hebrews 13:5-6 ~ because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence. “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
